Posted: 22 Feb 2013 01:36 AM PST  By Benjamin Weinthal; February 22, 2013 　Saudi Arabia’s notorious religious police, known as the Mutawa, swooped in on a private gathering of at least 53 Ethiopian Christians this month, shutting down their private prayer, and arresting the peaceful group of foreign workers for merely practicing their faith, FoxNews.com has learned. The mixed group of men and women was seized in a private residence in the city of Dammam, the capital of the wealthy oil province in Eastern Arabia, and Saudi authorities charged three Christian leaders with seeking to convert Muslims to Christianity. The latest crackdown on Christianity in the ultra-fundamental Islamic country comes on the heels of a brutal 2011/2012 incarceration and torture of 36 Ethiopian Christians, and drew a sharp rebuke from a U.S. lawmaker. "Nations that wish to be a part of the responsible nations of the world must see the protection of religious freedom and the principles of reason as an essential part of the duty of the state," Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., who sits on the Caucus on Religious Minorities in the Middle East, told FoxNews.com. "The U.S. ... should demand that any expatriate worker detained and held without charge for private religious activity in the Kingdom should be released immediately." - Dwight Bashir, U.S. Commission on Internaational Religious Freedom During Advent in 2011, Saudi authorities stormed a prayer meeting at the private home of one of the Ethiopian workers in the Red Sea city of Jeddah. The Saudi mutawa imprisoned 29 women and six men for more than seven months in barbaric prison conditions, where the men faced severe beatings and the women were subjected to sexually intrusive torture methods. After Christian organizations and human rights groups, as well as the United States government, complained, the Saudis deported the 35 Christian Ethiopian workers in August 2012. Last March, Abdulaziz ibn Abdullah Al al-Sheikh, the grand mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, declared it is "necessary to destroy all the churches in the Arabian Peninsula." Still, Saudi officials claim to tolerate other faiths even as the mutawa, or Commission to Promote Virtue and Prevent Vice, mount their crackdowns, said Dwight Bashir, deputy director for policy at the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. "During an official USCIRF visit to the Kingdom earlier this month, Saudi officials reiterated the government's long-standing policy that members of the Commission to Promote Virtue and Prevent Vice, also known as the religious police, should not interfere in private worship," Bashir said. "However, the past year has seen an uptick of reports that private religious gatherings have been raided resulting in arrests, harassment and deportations of foreign expatriate workers. "The U.S. government and international community should demand that any expatriate worker detained and held without charge for private religious activity in the Kingdom should be released immediately," Bashir added. A spokeswoman for the Saudi Embassy in Washington said she "is not allowed" to give her name and referred a FoxNews.com query to Nail al-Jubeir, a spokesman for the Saudi Embassy in Washington. He did not immediately return FoxNews.com telephone and email requests. Diplomats from Ethiopia’s embassy in Washington told FoxNews.com they are looking into preparing a statement about the arrests. Nina Shea, the director of the Washington-based Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom, told FoxNews.com that the arrests in Dammam are "part of Saudi Arabia’s policy to ban non-Muslim houses of worship and actually hunt down Christians in private homes." Shea, who was in the Saudi capital Riyadh as part of a U.S delegation two years ago, sharply criticized the Saudis for breaking their 2006 pledge to the U.S. government to not disrupt non-Islamic religious practices. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom termed in its 2012 report Saudi Arabia a "country of particular concern"-- along with other authoritarian states such as the Islamic Republic of Iran, North Korea, China and Sudan-- for repression of religious freedom. The Saudi government adheres to a strict form of Sunni Islam called Wahhabism that has animated many followers to engage in terrorism across the globe. The 9/11 terrorists, 19 of whom were Saudis, followed the Wahhabi school of militant Islamic ideology. Shea said "the U.S. government does not raise its voice in protest" as part of the U.S.-Saudi strategic partnership. She added the failure to push the Saudis to change their intolerant behavior "has taken the backseat to oil and the war on terror. The Saudis are playing a double game -- cooperating with the war on terror and working against the war on terror campaign." A telling example, she stressed, involves the Saudi government sending text books around the world that contain extreme forms of Islam. the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. ማጥፋት ቀላል ነው። ግን ተጠቃሚዎቹ ህግ አስከባሪዎቹ፣ ህግ አወጪዎቹና ዋናዎቹ “የአገሪቱ ህዳሴ ባለቤቶች” የሚባሉት በመሆናቸው አይታሰብም። አንዳንድ ዝግ ቤቶች በሲቪል ጠባቂዎች የሚጠበቁ ናቸው። አንዳንዴ ቤተመንግስቱንና ሟቹን የቤተመንግስት ነዋሪ ይጠብቁ የነበሩት በፈረቃ ይታደሙባቸዋል። ሃኪሞች፣ የህግ ባለሙያዎች፣ የሚመድቡ አሉ። ህጻናትን በመመልመል ሳውና በማስገባት፣ በማሰልጠን፣ ዘመናዊ ልብስ በማልበስ ለገበያ የሚያቀርቡ ብዙ ናቸው። እገሌ ለሚባል አየር መንገድ አስተናጋጅ እንቀጥራለን በሚል ታዳጊዎችን እያንጋጉ በወሲብ የሚነዱና የሚያነዱ ይህን ተግባራቸውን የሚፈጽሙት ማስታወቂያ እያስነገሩ ነው። ግብረሰዶም የሚያስፋፉ በየሆቴሉ ድሆችን በማደን ማበላሸት ከጀመሩ ቆይተዋል። አሁን አሁን በየጎዳናው ታዳጊዎችን በማታለል ህሊና የሚያስት ኬሚካልና እጽ በመጠቀም ህሊናቸውንና አካላቸውን መስበር ተለምዷል። ከሁሉም በላይ የሚያሳዝነው በዚህ የግብረሰዶም ወረራ ውስጥ ተጠቃሚ በመሆን ወንድሞቻቸውን የሚደልሉ መበራከታቸው ነው። ህጻናትን ለወሲብ የሚያቀርቡ ነፍሰ በላዎች ኢኮኖሚያቸው አድጎ ባለ ዘመናዊ መኪናና ህንጻ መሆናቸው ነው። አዲስ አበባ ባሉ ዝግ ቤቶች ወሲብንና ግብረ ሰዶምን የሚያሻቅጡ ህሊና ቢሶች ጉዳይ ያሳሰበው ቀጭኑ ዘ-ቄራ የሚባለው የአዲስ አበባው አምደኛችን ከወራት በፊት “የሚዘጋባቸው ህጻናት” በሚል ርዕስ የጉዳዩን አሳሳቢነት ጠቁሞ ነበር። (ዕድሜ ለኢንሳና አፈናው ብዕሩ ማዕቀብ ተደርጎበት በተከታታይ ጽሁፎችን ሳያስነብብ ቢቆይም እንዲሁ እንደጠፋ ግን አይቀርም፡፡) የከበረውን ትዳራቸውንና ያብራካቸውን ፍሬዎች ቤት ጥለው፤ ባይወልዷቸውም ልጆቻቸው ከሚሆኑት ጋር የሚዳሩትና፣ የውሽሞች ቀን እያከበሩ አረቄ የሚራጩት ሃብታሞች ጠለቅ ያለ ምርመራ ቢደረግባቸው እስከ ዱባይ የዘለቀው የግፍ ገመናቸው ይገለጥ ነበር። ዳሩ የወንጀሉ ዋና ተባባሪዎች ተቆጣጣሪዎቹና ህግ አስከባሪዎቹ በመሆናቸው አስቀድሞ እንደተባለው አይታሰብም። አዲስ አበባ መርከሷን ጥር 11 ቀን 2013 በአዲስ አበባ አስተዳደር ይፋ የተደረገው ጥናት፤ የቀንና የማታ ጭፈራ ቤቶችን፣ የእርቃን ዳንስ ቤቶችን፣ የማሳጅ፣ የቪዲዮ፣ የአደንዛዥ ዕጽ መጠቀሚያ፣ የግብረሰዶማውያን ማዘውተሪያ ቤቶችንና የመኪና ላይ ወሲብ መፈፀሚያና ጫት መቃሚያ ቦታዎችን በሚገባ በመቃኘት ተሰብስቦ በተሰራው ጥናት መረጋገጡን መረጃውን ይፋ ባደረገው አዲስ አድማስ ጋዜጣ በኩል ሰምተናል። ዘገባው ትኩረት የሚያሻውና በሚሊዮን በሚቆጠሩት ታዳጊዎች ህይወት ላይ ያነጣጠረ ስለሆነ እንዳለ አትመነዋል። አዲስ አበባ በህገወጥ ልማዶችና የወሲብ ድርጊቶች እየተናጠች ነው ግብረሰዶም ከሚገመተው በላይ በከፍተኛ መጠን እየተስፋፋ ነው፣ አብዛኞቹ የከተማዋ ማሳጅ ቤቶች የወሲብ ንግድ እንደሚያጧጡፉ ታውቋል፣ ከ3600 በላይ ህገወጥ ልማዶችና የወሲብ ድርጊቶች የሚፈፀምባቸው ቤቶች አሉ፣ ከፍተኛ የመንግስት ባለስልጣናት፣ ፖሊሶችና ነጋዴዎች የአነቃቂ እፆች ተጠቃሚ ናቸው፣ በእርቃን ጭፈራ ቤቶች ደጃፍ ከሚቆሙ መኪኖች አብዛኛዎቹ የመንግስትና የንግድ ታርጋ የለጠፉ ናቸው፡፡ በአዲስ አበባ ህገወጥ ተግባራት የሚከናወኑባቸው ቤቶች በከፍተኛ መጠን እየጨመሩ መምጣታቸውንና ከተማዋ አደጋ ላይ እንደሆነች ሰሞኑን ይፋ የተደረገ ጥናት አረጋገጠ፡፡ በአዲስ አበባ ከተማ አስተዳደር በትናንትናው ዕለት ይፋ የተደረገው ጥናት “መጤ ባህሎችና ልማዳዊ ድርጊቶች በአዲስ አበባ ከተማ ነዋሪዎች በተለይም በወጣቶችና ሴቶች ላይ እያስከተሉት ያለው አሉታዊ ተጽእኖ” በሚል ርዕስ የተካሄደ ሲሆን ከ3600 በላይ ህገወጥ የወሲብ ድርጊት የሚፈፀምባቸው ቤቶች እንዳሉ ጠቁሟል፡፡ ወደ 3 ሚሊዮን ከሚጠጋው የአዲስ አበባ ከተማ ነዋሪ ህዝብ ውስጥ 52.4 በመቶ የሚሆኑት ሴቶች ሲሆኑ ከአንድ ሚሊዮን በላይ የሚሆኑት ደግሞ ወጣቶች እንደሆኑ ያመለከተው ጥናቱ፣ አብዛኞቹ ሴቶችና ወጣቶች ላልተገቡ መጤ ባህሎችና ልማዳዊ ድርጊቶች እየተጋለጡ እንደሆነ ጠቁሟል፡፡ የከተማዋ ሴቶችና ወጣቶች ለሱስ አስያዥ እፆችና ለአልኮል መጠጦች እንዲሁም ለመጤ ባህል ወረርሽኞች ተጋላጭ ሆነዋልም ብሏል፡፡ ለዚህ እንደዋና ምክንያትነት የቀረበው በከተማዋ የቀንና የሌሊት ጭፈራ ቤቶች፣ የራቁት ዳንስ ቤቶች፣ የግብረሰዶም ወሲብ መፈፀሚያ ቦታዎች፣ የሺሻና የጫት ቤቶች፣ የቁማር ቤትና ህገወጥ የቪዲዮ ቤቶች ቁጥር በከፍተኛ መጠን እያደገ መምጣቱ እንደሆነ ተጠቁሟል፡፡ (ምስል: አዲስ አድማስ) በአሥሩም ክፍለ ከተሞች በሚገኙ የፖሊስ መምሪያዎች የተሰበሰበ መረጃ እንዳመለከተው፣ 3691 ቤቶች ለእነዚሁ ተግባራት ተከፍተው በከተማዋ ውስጥ አገልግሎት እየሰጡ ይገኛሉ፡፡ በእነዚህ ቤቶች መበራከትና በስፋት መሰራጨት ሳቢያም በርካታ ወጣቶች ለወንጀል ተግባራት፣ ለአደገኛ እፆች ሱሰኝነት፣ ለዝርፊያ፣ ለስደት ለጐዳና ተዳዳሪነት፣ ለኤችአይቪና ተያያዥ በሽታዎች እንዲሁም ላልተፈለገ እርግዝና ተዳርገዋል፡፡ ትናንት ይፋ የተደረገው ጥናት፤ የቀንና የማታ ጭፈራ ቤቶችን፣ የእርቃን ዳንስ ቤቶችን፣ የማሳጅ፣ የቪዲዮ፣ የአደንዛዥ ዕጽ መጠቀሚያ፣ የግብረሰዶማውያን ማዘውተሪያ ቤቶችንና የመኪና ላይ ወሲብ መፈፀሚያና ጫት መቃሚያ ቦታዎችን በሚገባ በመቃኘት በተሰበሰበ መረጃ የተሰራ መሆኑም ተገልጿል፡፡ የጥናቱ መረጃ እንደሚያመለክተው፤ የተመሳሳይ ፆታ የወሲብ ግንኙነት ማንኛውም የከተማዋ ነዋሪ ከሚገምተውና ከሚያስበው እጅግ በበለጠ መልኩ ተስፋፍቷል፡፡ በአሁኑ ወቅት ድርጊቱ እየተስፋፋ በማህበረሰቡ ላይ የስነልቡና፣ የማህበራዊ ግንኙነት፣ የትምህርት ማቋረጥና፣ የጤና ችግር እያስከተለ ነው ተብሏል፡፡ ዕድሜያቸው ከ15 ዓመት በታች የሆኑ ህፃናት፣ የ2ኛ ደረጃና የከፍተኛ ተቋማት ተማሪዎች፣ በወሲብ ንግድ ሥራ ላይ የተሰማሩ ሰዎች፣ እንዲሁም በማረሚያ ቤት የሚገኙ የህግ ታራሚዎች የችግሩ ከፍተኛ ተጠቂዎች እንደሆኑ ጥናቱ አመልክቷል፡፡ ከተመሳሳይ ፆታ ጋር በመሄድ በወሲብ ንግድ ሥራ የሚተዳደሩ ሰዎች ቁጥርም እየተበራከተ መሆኑንና ድርጊቱ በሚያስደነግጥ ፍጥነት እየተስፋፋ እንደሆነ ታውቋል፡፡ አዲስ አበባ የጭፈራ ቤቶችና የራቁት ዳንስ ቤቶች ከቀን ወደቀን እየጨመረ የሚሄድባት ከተማ መሆኗን የጠቆመው ጥናቱ፤ በተለይ ከማህበረሰቡ ወግና የአኗኗር ዘይቤ የወጡ፣ ግለሰባዊ ክብርን የሚፈታተኑ፤ የኢትዮጵያዊነት እሴቶችን የሚያጠፉ የእርቃን ጭፈራ ቤቶች እየተስፋፉ መምጣታቸውን አመልክቷል፡፡ በእነዚህ የእርቃን ዳንስ ቤቶች በራፍ ላይ ከሚቆሙ መኪናዎች ውስጥ አብዛኛዎቹ የመንግስት ታርጋ የለጠፉ መሆናቸውን ይፋ ያደረገው ጥናቱ፤ የግልና የንግድ ታርጋዎችን የለጠፉ መኪኖች በብዛት እንደሚታዩና የተወሰኑ የዲፕሎማትና የእርዳታ ድርጅቶች መኪኖችም እንደሚገኙበት ጠቁሟል፡፡ ከእርቃን ዳንስ ቤቶች ጠባቂዎችና ከእርቃን ደናሾቹ ጋር በተደረገ ኢ-መደባዊ ውይይት በቦታው መጥተው የሚገለገሉም ሆነ በየቤታቸው በግል በማስጠራት አገልግሎት ከሚያገኙት ደንበኞች መካከል የተለያዩ የመንግስት የሥራ ኃላፊዎች፣ ታዋቂ ግለሰቦች፣ የመንግስት ሠራተኞች፣ የውጭ ዲፕሎማቶችና በንግድ ሥራ ላይ የተሰማሩ ግለሰቦች እንደሚገኙበት የጥናቱ መረጃ ይፋ አድርጓል፡፡ የእርቃን ደናሾቹ ወርሃዊ ገቢ የተለያዩ ጥቅማጥቅሞችን ሳይጨምር ከ3ሺ-14ሺ ብር እንደሚደርስ የሚጠቁመው ጥናቱ፤ ለዚህ ሥራ የሚመለመሉት ወጣት ሴቶች የኢኮኖሚ አቅማቸው ዝቅ ያለ፤ መልካም የሰውነት አቋም ያላቸው፤ የኮሌጅና የዩኒቨርሲቲ ተማሪዎችና ከሞዴሊንግ ማሰልጠኛ ተቋማት የሚመረቁ ወጣቶች እንደሆኑም ያመለክታል፡፡ በአሁኑ ወቅት ወሲብና ወሲብ ነክ ጉዳዮች የሚፈፀሙባቸው ማሳጅ (መታሻ) ቤቶችን መጠቀም እየተለመደ መምጣቱን ይፋ ያደረገው መረጃው፤ ከመታሻ ቤቶቹ አብዛኛዎቹ ደረጃቸውን በጠበቁ ትላልቅ የመኖሪያ ቤቶችና በትላልቅ የንግድ ህንፃዎች ላይ እንደሚገኙና የ24 ሰዓት አገልግሎት የሚሰጡ እንደሆኑ ጠቁሟል፡፡ በእነዚህ ቤቶች በሚሰጠው የመታሸት አገልግሎት ሥር በተለየ ሁኔታ ለምርጫ የሚቀርቡት ድርጊቶች ህብረተሰቡን ከባህልና ሥነምግባር ውጪ ለሆነ ባህርያት እየዳረጉት እንደሆነና የማሳጅ አገልግሎት መስጫ ቤቶቹም ከቀን ወደ ቀን ቁጥራቸው እየጨመረ መሄዱ በጥናቱ ላይ ተጠቁሟል፡፡ የጥናቱ አዲስ ግኝት ሆኖ የተገለፀው ሌላው ጉዳይ በመኪና ውስጥ የሚፈፀሙ ጫት የመቃምና የወሲብ ድርጊቶች መስፋፋት ነው፡፡ በከተማዋ የተለያዩ አካባቢዎች በተለይም በቦሌ በሚገኙ ትላልቅ ህንፃዎች፣ ባሮችና ሬስቶራንቶች ሥር፣ በመንገዶች ግራና ቀኝ እንዲሁም በመኪና ማቆሚያ ቦታዎች ላይ በመኪና ውስጥ በተናጥል እና በጥንድ በመሆን ጫት መቃም፣ ወሲብ መፈፀምና ሌሎች ያልተገቡ ተግባራትን መከወን በስፋት እየታየ መሆኑን ጥናቱ ያመለክታል፡፡ ይሄም ተግባር ከተማዋን እጅግ አደገኛ ወደሆነ አደጋ ውስጥ እየከተታት እንደሆነ የጠቆመው ጥናቱ፤ በአገሪቱ የሬዲዮ ፕሮግራሞች በቀጥታ የሚተላለፉ ፕሮግራሞች ለእንዲህ ያሉት ድርጊቶች ከፍተኛ ድርሻ እንዳላቸው ገልጿል፡፡ በሬዲዮ የሚቀርቡና በወሲብ ዙሪያ የሚያጠነጥኑ የቀጥታ ውይይት ስርጭቶች ከአስተማሪነታቸው ይልቅ ወጣቶችንና ህፃናትን ለወሲብ ተግባር የሚገፋፉና ያዳመጡትን በተግባር ላይ ለማዋል ከቤት ወይም ከጐረቤት ጀምረው ወደሴተኛ አዳሪዎች እስከመሄድ እያደረሳቸው እንደሆነ የጥናቱ ውጤት ይፋ አድርጓል፡፡ ሱስ አስያዥ እፆችን መጠቀም፣ ሀሺሽ፣ ሺሻ፣ ሄሮይን እና የአልኮል መጠጦች ለዚህ ተግባር ሰፊ ድርሻ እንዳላቸው የጠቆመው መረጃው፤ ዕድሜያቸው ከ25-30 አልፎ አልፎም በአስራዎቹ ዕድሜ ክልል ውስጥ የሚገኙ ህፃናት የማሪዋና ወይንም የካናቢስ ተጠቃሚዎች እየሆኑ መምጣታቸውን ገልጿል፡፡ በመረጃው መሠረት፤ በተለያየ የመንግስት ኃላፊነት ላይ የሚገኙ ግለሰቦች፣ በማህበረሰቡ ውስጥ ከፍተኛ ማህበራዊ ደረጃ የሚሰጣቸው ግለሰቦችና በኢኮኖሚው ዘርፍ ትልቅ አስተዋጽኦ ሊያበረክቱ የሚችሉ ባለሙያዎችና የንግድ ሰዎች በዚህ መጤና ያልተገባ ልማድ በከፍተኛ ሁኔታ ተጠቂ ሆነዋል፡፡ የእነዚህ ግለሰቦች በዚህ ያልተገባ ተግባር መጠመድ አርአያ ሊሆኑለት ለሚገባው ህብረተሰብ የሚያስተላልፈው አፍራሽ መልዕክት ከፍተኛ ነው ያለው ጥናቱ፤ በአገሪቱ እድገትና የልማት እንቅስቃሴ ላይ ከፍተኛ የዝቅጠት አደጋ እያደረሰ መሆኑን አመልክቷል፡፡ ለህገወጥ ተግባራቱ መስፋፋት በአገሪቱ ያለው ህግ እርስ በርሱ የሚጣረስ መሆኑን ጥናቱ እንደምክንያት አቅርቧል፡፡ “መንግስት በአንድ በኩል ለቪዲዮ ቤቶች ፍቃድ ይሰጣል፤ በሌላ በኩል ደግሞ ጐጂነቱን ያወራል፤ በየጊዜው ሺሻ ቤቶችን የማጥፋት ዘመቻ ያካሂዳል፣ ሺሻ ማጨሻውን እየሰበሰበ ያቃጥላል፤ ነገር ግን ይህንን ሥራ Ethiopia: Changes without Improvements Posted: 21 Feb 2013 01:51 PM PST   The Human Rights Situation in Ethiopia Deteriorated Rapidly After the New PM Came to Power HRLHA Statement Ethiopians and the friends of Ethiopia have recently witnessed two major changes taking place in the country particularly in relation to honoring and protecting human rights. One is the replacement of Mr. Meles Zenawi, whose government tightly restricted fundamental human rights and severely punished those who attempted to exercise some of their basic freedoms, by another prime minister. The other change is Ethiopia’s election to the United Nations’ Human Rights Council. Following those changes, again Ethiopians and their friends expected some kinds of improvements in terms of human rights situations in the country. There have been reasons why improvements were expected in both cases. Firstly, the new prime minster, Mr. Hailemariam Dessalegn, was believed to be much more and well educated person than Mr. Meles Zenawi, who was just a rebel leader and a first-year university drop-out before coming to power. Besides, contrary to Mr. Meles’ underlying political principles of racism and regionalism, Mr. Hailemariam was expected to be far from racial partiality, discrimination and political biases. Secondly, membership to the UN Human Rights Council comes with such obligations as holding the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe (UN General Assembly Resolution 60/251). Unfortunately, the expected improvements haven’t happened. Instead, we are witnessing the worsening of the human rights situations in the country. Good most recent cases in point are the Suri massacre in the Omo Valley, south-western Ethiopia, and racially motivated brutal crackdown against the students of Addis Ababa, Arat Kilo University, almost all of whom were Oromo nationals. The Army surrounded the Suri women, 28 December 2012 The massacre of members of the Suri tribe took place in December 2012, when a heavily armed national army was sent to the area to silence the Suri people’s protest against evictions and displacements from their ancestral land, properties, and all forms of livelihoods against their will and out of their consent. According to the report obtained from a Human Rights researcher called Doglas Burji[1], 147 Suris were killed in a one time attack by the national army at an area called Beyahola in Suri village; and their dead bodies were buried in a mass grave deep in the Dibdib forest not far from the village. The Oromo students of Addis Ababa University were severely attacked, apprehended, and sent to detentions simply because they attempted to express their anger and opposition to racial attacks. In the incident, more than 130 students (most of them Oromos) were arrested[1]. Among the detainees, onestudent was severely beaten by security forces and died in a hospital where he was taken to for a pretentious treatment. From among the 130 detained students, many were released during the first week of their detention; while 35 Oromo students are still in prison. Both cases were not the first of their kinds to happen. They were exact duplication of previous similar incidents that took place for the same purposes of promoting political and economic interests of the group in power. Not only the international documents and/or treaties that Ethiopia has so far ratified, but also a lot of legal and constitutional documents issued at different times by different regimes of Ethiopia, including the ones currently in power talk a lot about the protection and promotion of fundamental human rights. But, all remained on paper. As a result, Ethiopians from all walks of life, age, and gender, religious and ethnic groups have been paying so dearly including in their lives. It is still not too late to reverse the current harmful approach to human rights in Ethiopia and, by so doing, to prevent the worst from happening. Therefore, the HRLHA calls up on all local, regional, and international human rights and diplomatic agencies to renew, under the new leadership, their commitment to encouraging and supporting the protection and promotion of fundamental rights in Ethiopia. We also call up on those agencies to put all necessary pressures on the Ethiopian Government so that it abides by all laws and constitutional provisions of the country that apply to human rights as well as the international human rights instruments it has adopted.
