Democracy, Tolerance, and G7’s position towards Eritrea

On Sunday September 22, 2013, the Ginbot 7 leadership had a very revealing and open discussion in Washington DC meeting like it has never had before. As you know, the issue of working with Eritrea has been a bone in the throat for G7 as well as for its supporters around the world. Many have argued against using Eritrea as a spring board to wage an armed struggle against TPLF.
Opponents claim that Eritrea cannot be trusted based on their experience with Isayas Afeworki so far and his public rhetoric as it relates to Ethiopia. They may have a point. But the problem is that they don’t practice the position they defend or argue for. They don’t provide an alternative and actually implement that alternative. For example, they don’t answer to the question of where to wage an armed struggle and show us the way by an example.  They don’t. Why don’t they find a place within Ethiopia and wage an armed struggle and show us the way? Why don’t they go and practice what they preach like G7 Popular Force instead of simply analyzing and arguing from the comfort of their homes in the West? What they do is simply disagree and sometimes with bitterness and even animosity against G7’s position towards Eritrea.

Instead of making an honest and logical attempt to convince and win support, those who oppose G7′s position in Eritrea use intimidation, name callings, insults, put downs and innuendos to impose their opinion on G7 and its supporters. But the irony is that these forces claim to believe and fight for democracy in Ethiopia and yet they forcefully impose their position on others. G7 has repeatedly expressed the right of any political entity to follow a path it believes in without imposing its policy or belief on any one else except asking their support. G7 has often made clear that it does not oppose other political parties who pursue a political path different than its own. It is interesting whether we know how to win support with a clean and convincing argument backed by results on the ground instead of using endless spurious arguments and worse innuendos and name callings. 
Those who oppose G7 are not all in the same wave length. One group is of course the enemy. Pro-TPLF mercenaries like Awramba Times editor and TPLF dogs are barking against G7 simply to accomplish their paid assignments. It is their duty. There is no surprise there. They are part of the package. There is a second group that questions and suspects a multi-national political force like G7 for fear of revenge by TPLF victims in the form of genocide or a lesser nationwide violence. This group has a legitimate fear.
But opposing such a political force like G7, or any other multi-national force for that matter, is not a solution to their fear. On the contrary, a force such as G7 that has created an alliance with Tigray People Democratic Movement (TPDM), if strengthened, may help stabilize the country by preventing a possible chaos and ethnic violence in Ethiopia when TPLF collapses. But there are some in this group who may have their own ax to grind who dream to preserve the ethnic hegemony of the status quo by reforming TPLF one way or another. And they strongly oppose the emergence of a formidable multi-national party or organization like G7 or any other multi-national party or group. They support and are comfortable working with a passive resistance movement(s) and if possible lead it (them) or high jack its (their) leadership. They infiltrate these types of do-nothing organizations and use them as their handy tool to wage their smear campaign and propaganda against G7 and anything related to it.
There is a third group. These are political organizations that are contemplating and competing for power in Ethiopia after TPLF. They believe that if they don’t cook the dish, it will never taste good. They want power at any cost and by any means. They are ego-driven and uncompromising, full of intrigues and back stabbing. Nothing satisfies them until they are in charge. They oppose everything any opponent does. They deliberately or honestly believe that truth is on their side. Compromise or giving a chance to others wounds their ego. If something is successful and they are not a part of it, by chance or by design, they want no part of it. And they will oppose it. That is why we see people and even organizations that have the audacity to oppose ESAT some openly and a few in silence. This hurts their ambitions and their life long political journey for fame and fortune extinguishing their chances to positions of power in Ethiopia. And they don’t like it a bit.
There is one final group which I consider innocent but suspicious. This is the vast majority that is mostly patriotic that should be handled with care. They have no ax to grind except to see Ethiopia free. It is critical that they should be convinced to make a difference. Our story with Eritrea is full of suspicions and actual heart-breaking experiences due to the war waged between Ethiopia and Eritrea for over 40 years now. This group doesn’t trust anything related to Eritrea no matter who said what including God. It has a legitimate concern but suspicion should not tie our hands and prevent us from doing what needs to be done. Our situation today is desperate. TPLF has done and still doing all it can to destroy our people and country.
This suspicious group should know that there are times in life when you have to do what you got to do to get out of a rock and hard place by swallowing our pride and controlling our suspicion. There is a saying in our country,”ቀን እስኪአልፍልህ የአባትህ ባርያ ይግዛህ” that sums it up. This group has to be convinced that there is no alternative except to give the policy of using Eritrea as staging platform to deal with TPLF. This is the group Ato Andargachew Tsige specifically addressed asking them to give G7 a chance while holding its suspicions.  
We have been spinning our wheels for over 22 years while TPLF is in power. We have left no stone unturned in this struggle for freedom and democracy in Ethiopia. We have been there and we have done that all we can. Nothing happened. Zilch. Twenty two years is too long for doing the same thing for the same problem over and over again. It is time to take a risk or two and test a different path.  TPLF has been working hard to negotiate with Eritrea for years. It has tried 37 times to get a deal from Isayas. And not so long ago, TPLF has even offered free electricity to Eritrea when the ‘dream’ Dam is completed. Three weeks ago, Ethiopia’s outgoing president said he wants to go to Eritrea and negotiate on an individual bases without representing his government. All these furious activities by TPLF should ring a bell in our brains. They know Eritrea is the only option left for the opposition to launch a meaningful offensive against it. Not exploring to use the Eritrean option, despite its problems, is very troublesome to say the least, especially when no alternative has been found for the last 22 years.
At this point, all of us have one universal enemy. And we have to focus on it. And that is TPLF. And it is wise to postpone and talk about our differences after we free Ethiopia from TPLF at any cost and by any means necessary. Now, we don’t have the privilege or the time to go against each other’s throat. We simply can’t afford it.
The G7 leadership has directly presented the question in a ‘take it or leave it’ manner to the audience and to the Diaspora watching on ESAT. Ato Andargachew Tsige, secretary of G7, has explained in detail about the Eritrean question during the meeting. It may be hard to tell if everybody is convinced. With all their suspicions remaining, there is no doubt many may be considering to give G7′s policy on Eritrea a chance, if it has any possibility of working, given the dire and critical circumstances Ethiopia has found itself at this time. 
There is no sure thing in life as well as in struggle. You take chances and you take risks. Not a blind risk but a pragmatic one based on the circumstances you found yourself boxed in. Not taking that risk, no matter how difficult, is committing suicide. You put all your options on the table. And you pick the one with the least risk. And then you move on. And if not, the choice is to get stuck in some meaningless and fruitless activity and continue to waste time, money and even lives for nothing and finally give up and be forgotten. G7 seems to have made a decision to take the least risky option, according to Ato Andargachew Tsige, and is pursuing it with resolve. 
We should permit and even provide whatever support we can to G7 while we are trying our own. If we can’t do this, then the easiest and smartest thing to do is to get the hell out of the way. G7 or any other organization doesn’t need the approval or the blessing of others to pursue its objective. Every organization has its own organizational independence. Unless we are supporting it financially as well as in other ways, we are in no position to force it change its policy.  Let G7 pay for its own destiny even if the result along the way confirms our suspicions. Democracy includes the right of an individual or any organizational entity to make its own mistakes and hopefully learn from them. G7 has that right. So does every other organization.
And for those of us with an opposing view, let us do what we believe in without encroaching our position on G7 and its policy towards Eritrea. According to Ato Andargachew Tsige, G7 is not forcing its position upon any person or political entity. He said they don’t oppose the positions other political organizations are taking when it comes to Eritrea.
The take home message is that, we in the opposition camp should all follow our individual political choices in our quest to remove TPLF from power. There is no need to vehemently be involved in slash and burn campaign against a position we don’t agree on. No one party or person has the monopoly on the truth of what works best to bring TPLF down. The only way to establish that truth will be based on the results of a given policy on the ground. And let us all give G7 a chance, with patience and a grain of salt, to see what works with our suspicions still intact. As long as G7 is an anti-TPLF force, we should tolerate the alternative path it is taking at its own risk even if we don’t agree to it. In the final analysis, the vast majority of Ethiopians are patriotic at heart and are dreaming day and night for TPLF to go away, once and for all, out of their lives and out of their beloved country at any cost and by any means necessary. ዛሬ ሴፕቴምበር 28 በኦስሎ ኖርዌይ ለግንቦት ሰባት ህዝባዊ ኃይል የታሳካ የገቢ ማሰባሰቢያ ተደረገ። በገቢ ማሰባሰቢያው ላይ በስጦታ እና ጨረታ ብቻ 408 ,633.85 የኖርዌጅያን ክሮነር የተገኘ ሲሆን ። ይህ ገቢ ከምግብ ሺያጭ ፣ ከመግቢያ ትኬት፣ ከቲሸርት ሺያጭ እንዲሁም ከተለያዩ ባህላዊ ቁሳቁሶች ሺያጭ ሳይጭምር መሆኑ ወዳጆችን ሲያስፈነድቅ ጠላቶችንን አንገት አስደፍቷል ። በፕሮግራሙ ላይ አቶ አንዳርጋቸው ጽጌ እና ኮማንደር አሰፋ ማሩ በመገኘት ከሃገር ወዳድ ኢትዮጵያዊያኖች ጋር ምክክር አድርገዋል። ሙሉ ዘገባውን በቅርብ ይዘን እንቀርባለን ።

ከአንዳንድ የግል ባንኮች የተገኘው መረጃ እንደሚያመለክተው፣ በኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ ውስጥ ያላቸውን አካውንት እንዳያንቀሳቅሱ የተገለጸላቸው፣ አካውንታቸው ባለበት ቅርንጫፍ ሥራ አስኪያጅ በኩል በተጻፈ ደብዳቤ ነው፡፡

ጉዳዩን በተመለከተ ያነጋገርናቸው የግል ባንኮች ኃላፊዎች እንደጠቆሙት፣ የኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ ዕርምጃ ያልተጠበቀ እንደሆነባቸው ነው፡፡ ‹‹ሆኖም የእኛን የተወዳዳሪዎቹን አካውንት እንዳይንቀሳቀስ ሲያደርግ ቢያንስ ምክንያቱን ሊገልጽ ይገባ ነበር፤›› ይላሉ፡፡ የግል ባንኮቹ በኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ ውስጥ አካውንት የከፈቱበት ዋነኛ ዓላማ አንዳንድ ክፍያዎችን በቀጥታ ከዚያ ለመክፈል እንዲያስችላቸው እንጂ ሌላ ዓላማ የሌለው መሆኑን የግል ባንኮች ኃላፊዎች ያስረዳሉ፡፡
አንድ ባንክ በሌላ ባንክ ውስጥ አካውንት ሊከፍት የሚችለው በሥራ ውስጥ የሚያጋጥሙ ክፍያዎችን በቀላሉ ለመፈጸምና የተቀላጠፈ አገልግሎት ለመስጠት ታስቦ ነው በማለት የሚያስረዱት የግል ባንኮች ኃላፊዎች፣ ይህ በባንክ ኢንዱስትሪ ውስጥ የተለመደ አሠራር ቢሆንም የኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ ወደዚህ ዕርምጃ መግባቱ እንቆቅልሽ እንደሆነባቸው አስረድተዋል፡፡
በአሁኑ ወቅት 19 ባንኮች በሥራ ላይ ሲሆኑ፣ ሦስቱ የመንግሥት 16ቱ ደግሞ የግል ናቸው፡፡ የግሎቹም ሆነ የመንግሥት ባንኮች በጥምረት የሚያስተሳስራቸው የኢትዮጵያ ባንኮች ማኅበር ሲሆን፣ አሁን የኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ የወሰደውን ዕርምጃ በማኅበራቸው በኩል ለመነጋገር ሐሳብ ያላቸው መሆኑንም የተገኘው መረጃ ያስረዳል፡፡
የኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ አካውንታቸው እንዳይንቀሳቀስ ወሰነ ማለት ግን በአካውንታቸው ውስጥ ያለውን ገንዘብ ያግዳል ማለት እንዳልሆነ ተጠቅሷል፡፡

አንድ ባንክ በሌላ ባንክ ውስጥ አካውንት ሊከፍት የሚችለው በሥራ ውስጥ የሚያጋጥሙ ክፍያዎችን በቀላሉ ለመፈጸምና የተቀላጠፈ አገልግሎት ለመስጠት ታስቦ ነው በማለት የሚያስረዱት የግል ባንኮች ኃላፊዎች፣ ይህ በባንክ ኢንዱስትሪ ውስጥ የተለመደ አሠራር ቢሆንም የኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ ወደዚህ ዕርምጃ መግባቱ እንቆቅልሽ እንደሆነባቸው አስረድተዋል፡፡
በአሁኑ ወቅት 19 ባንኮች በሥራ ላይ ሲሆኑ፣ ሦስቱ የመንግሥት 16ቱ ደግሞ የግል ናቸው፡፡ የግሎቹም ሆነ የመንግሥት ባንኮች በጥምረት የሚያስተሳስራቸው የኢትዮጵያ ባንኮች ማኅበር ሲሆን፣ አሁን የኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ የወሰደውን ዕርምጃ በማኅበራቸው በኩል ለመነጋገር ሐሳብ ያላቸው መሆኑንም የተገኘው መረጃ ያስረዳል፡፡
የኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ አካውንታቸው እንዳይንቀሳቀስ ወሰነ ማለት ግን በአካውንታቸው ውስጥ ያለውን ገንዘብ ያግዳል ማለት እንዳልሆነ ተጠቅሷል፡፡

ከአንዳንድ የግል ባንኮች የተገኘው መረጃ እንደሚያመለክተው፣ በኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ ውስጥ ያላቸውን አካውንት እንዳያንቀሳቅሱ የተገለጸላቸው፣ አካውንታቸው ባለበት ቅርንጫፍ ሥራ አስኪያጅ በኩል በተጻፈ ደብዳቤ ነው፡፡
የኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ ይህንን ዕርምጃ ለመውሰድ የተገደደበት ምክንያት ግልጽ ባይሆንም፣ ከሰኞ መስከረም 6 ቀን 2005 ዓ.ም. ጀምሮ በኢትዮጵያ ንግድ ባንክ ውስጥ የነበራቸውን አካውንት ማንቀሳቀስ የማይችሉ መሆኑ እንደተገለጸላቸው ታውቋል፡፡

the world. Many have argued against using Eritrea as a spring board to wage an armed struggle against TPLF.

Opponents claim that Eritrea can not be trusted based on their experience with Isayas Afeworki so far and his public rhetoric as it relates to Ethiopia. They may have a point. But the problem is that they don’t practice the position they defend or argue for. They don’t provide an alternative and actually implement that alternative. For example, they don’t answer to the question of where to wage an armed struggle and show us the way by an example.  They don’t. For instance, what don’t they find a place within Ethiopia and wage an armed struggle? What do they go and practice what they preach instead of simply analyzing and arguing from the comfort of their homes in the West. What they do is simply disagree and sometimes with bitterness and even animosity against G7 position towards Eritrea.

Instead of making an honest and logical attempt to convince and win our support, those who oppose G7′s position in Eritrea use intimidation, name callings, insults, put downs and inuendos to impose their opinion on G7 and its supporters. But the irony is that these forces claim to believe and fight for democracy in Ethiopia and yet they impose their position on others. G7 has repeatedly expressed the right of any political entity to follow a path it believes in without imposing its policy or belief on any one else except asking their support.

G7 has often made clear that it does not oppose other political parties who pursue a political path different than its own. It is interesting whether we know how to win support with a clean logical argument backed by results in the ground instead of an endless ineundos and name callings. 

Those who opposes G7 are not all  in the same wave length. Pro-TPLF mercenaries like Awramba Times editor are going against G7 to accomplish their paid assignments. There is no surprise about them. They are part of the package. There is also a second group that questions and suspects a multi-national political force like G7 for fear of revenge by TPLF victims in the form of genocide or a lesser nationwide violence against the Tigrian population.

 These group has a legitmate fear. But opposing such a political force as G7 is not a solution to their fear. In fact, a force such as G7, if strengthened, may help stabilize the country by preventing a possible chaos and ethnic violence in Ethiopia when TPLF collapses.

And there is a third group. These are political organizations who are competing for power in Ethiopia after TPLF. They believe if they don’t cook the dish, it does not taste good. They want power at any cost and by any means necessary. They are ego-driven and uncompromising. Nothing satisfies them until they are in power to implement their belief. They oppose everything any opponent does. They deliberately or honestly believe that truth is on their side. Doing so is wounding their ego and it is relinquishing the possibility of power in Ethiopia.

There is one final group which I consider innocent but suspicious. Our story with Eritrea is full of suspicions and actual heart-breaking experience due to the war waged between Ethiopia and Eritrea for over 40 years now. They don’t trust anything related to Eritrea no matter who said what including God. These group has a legitmate concern but suspicion should not tie our hands and prevent us from doing what needs to be done. Our situation today is desperate. TPLF has done and still doing all it can to destroy our people and country. These suspicioius group should know that there are times in life when you have to do what you got to do to get out of a rock and hard place by swallowing our pride and controlling our suspicion.There is a saying in our country,” ቀን እስኪአልፍልህ የአባትህ ባርያ ይግዛህ” that we should follow. These group has no alternative except to give it a try while holding its suspicions. At this point, all of us have one universal enemy. And we have to focus on it. And that is TPLF. And it is wise to talk about our differences after we free Ethiopia from TPLF by any means necessary.

Ethiopia: Beyond the Hubris of Evil September 22, 2013

When I wrote a commentary on the plight of the imprisoned 32-year old Ethiopian journalist Reeyot Alemu last April, I titled it “The Audacity of Evil in Ethiopia.” At the time, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) had sent a letter to the “Minister of Justice” of the ruling regime in Ethiopia pleading medical care for Reeyot and urging them to spare her from a threatened solitary confinement. In that commentary, I explained why I was compelled to “stray from my professional fields of law and politics” to moral philosophy.
In this commentary, I am again compelled to indulge in philosophical musings on the hubris of evil. I am prompted once again by a statement of the Committee to Protect Journalists issued last week protesting the decision by the ruling regime to impose severe visitor restrictions on Reeyot.  CPJ “called upon the Ethiopian authorities to lift these latest restrictions and allow Reeyot Alemu to receive all visitors… She is a journalist, not a criminal, and should not be behind bars.”
Reeyot began a hunger strike to protest an order by regime officialsReeyot began a hunger strike to protest an order by regime officials to pre-clear a list of her prison visitors. “In retaliation for the hunger strike, authorities forbade her from having any visitors excluding her parents and priest.” She was subsequently told that “she could receive any visitors except for her younger sister and her fiancé, journalist Sileshi Hagos [who had spoken publicly about the visitor exclusion order]… Sileshi was detained for four hours at the prison later that day when he attempted to visit Reeyot.”
On a number of occasions, I have written about Reeyot’s plight, courage and fearless advocacy of press independence and public accountability in Ethiopia. In the last two years, she has become a heroine of press freedom not only in Ethiopia and Africa but the world. The prestigious international press awards she has received speak volumes on her ferocious defense of press freedom in Ethiopia. Reeyot was the recipient of the  International Women’s Media Foundation 2012 Courage in Journalism Award for “her refusal to self-censor in a place where that practice is standard, and her unwillingness to apologize for truth-telling, even though contrition could win her freedom.” She received the 2012 Hellman/Hammett award administered by Human Rights Watch “in recognition of her efforts to promote free expression in Ethiopia.” She also received the 2013 World Press Freedom Prize awarded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for “exceptional courage, resistance and commitment to freedom of expression”. She and co-political prisoner Eskinder Nega are two of seven journalists and human rights activists nominated for the European Parliament’s 2013 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.
Virtually every major international human rights and press organization has come to Reeyot’s defense since her arrest in 2011. Human Rights Watch challenged the legal validity of the “terrorism” allegations against her and noted that “the descriptions of the charges [against Reeyot] in the initial charge sheet did not contain even the basic elements of the crimes of which the defendants are accused….”Amnesty International declared that “There is no evidence that [Reeyot and the other independent journalists] are guilty of any criminal wrongdoing. We believe that they are prisoners of conscience, prosecuted because of their legitimate criticism of the government. They must be released immediately and unconditionally.” PEN American Center “protested the harsh punishment handed down to” Reeyot and fellow political prisoner Woubshet Taye and demanded their “immediate and unconditional release.” The International Women’s Media Foundation saw Reeyot’s “trial” as an intimidation tactic against all independent women journalists: “The fact that the Ethiopian Government pursues and persecutes courageous, brave and professional women journalists does not bode well particularly for young women who may be interested in journalism. As a result, women’s voices (as reporters, editors, journalists, decision-making chambers) are rarely heard and women’s  issues are often relegated to secondary position.” CPJ demanded, “Writing critical columns about the government is not a criminal offense and is certainly not a terrorist act–Reeyot should be released immediately.” Many other organizations including Reporters Without Borders have expressed similar views and made demands for her immediate release.
Hubris of evil
When I wrote about the audacity of evil last April, I was philosophically concerned about the evils of ordinary human wickedness and bestial human behavior. I was concerned about gratuitous evil (pointless evil from which no greater good can be derived) committed by ordinary and sub-ordinary wicked people whose intellect is corrupted and are bereft of moral discernment and judgment. Here I write about the hubris of evil. In ancient Greece, hubris was the most heinous of crimes. Aristotle described hubris as an abusive act intended to shame and humiliate the victim, not because of anything the victim has done or might do but merely for the gratification and pleasure of the abuser. He wrote that the insolently hubristic “man thinks himself greatly superior to others when ill-treating them. That is why youths and rich men are insolent; they think themselves superior when they show insolence” (Rhetoric 1378b).
Hubris is a malignancy of the heart and depravity of the mind. The hubristically evil have two basic characteristics. First, they believe they are untouchable and accountable to no one. They have a sociopathic personality which prevents them from maintaining a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience. For them, there is no law to curtail their excesses because they believe their words and acts are ipso facto law. Feeding at the trough of moral nihilism (whatever they say is right or wrong), they are driven by a deep psychological need to degrade, humiliate, demean, brutalize and dehumanize their victims as a means to self-respect and personal empowerment. When they degrade and humiliate their defenseless and helpless victims, the derive a perverse pleasure of omnipotence, superiority and self-affirmation. For the hubristically evil, indifference is their modus vivendi (way of life) and cruelty their modus operandi (way of doing things).
Second, the hubristically evil are incapable of admitting wrong or accepting responsibility for their wrongful actions. Rather, they take cover in a perverted morality of blaming the victim. Instead of atoning for their misdeeds and accepting responsibility, they demand that the very victims they have humiliated, brutalized and abused get on their knees apologize to them and beg forgiveness. They have the brazen audacity to insist that their victims must take full responsibility for the abuse they have received from their abusers.
The political sadism of the regime in Ethiopia
As I seek to understand the hubris of the ruling regime in Ethiopia, I ask some simple questions. Why do those in power in Ethiopia want to torment and humiliate Reeyot (and the other political prisoners)? Isn’t a 14 year sentence enough punishment for a young woman who committed NO crime? Is the regime punishing her with solitary confinement, visitor restrictions, denial of medical care and subjecting her to daily degradation and humiliation because of her defiance and outright refusal to beg for a pardon to get out of prison? Do they take her defiance as her ultimate expression of contempt and lack of fear of them? What do they gain by locking her up in solitary confinement, an administrative action reserved only for the most violent inmates in any prison in the world? Does the regime resent Reeyot (and the other high profile political prisoners) because she is a shining star of press freedom not only for Ethiopia but also for women journalists in Africa, Latin America and Asia?
Those who insist on tormenting Reeyot, Eskinder, Woubshet and the other high profile political prisoners do so to force them to make a public confession of guilt for their “crimes” and beg for a pardon. The “pardon” trick was “invented” by the late honcho of the regime. After warehousing dozens of opposition leaders who won the May 2005 parliamentary election, the late regime leader set up an “elders committee” to facilitate a pardon process for them. To get out of prison, the opposition leaders had to sign a confession (“a pardon application”) which stated: “We, leaders of CUD, have accepted our mistake committed following the election disagreement of May 2005 in which we tried to change unconstitutionally various bodies of the government. We will take the responsibility in person and in group for these mistakes.” They signed the “confession” and were pardoned and released!
In December 2008, the late regime leader railroaded opposition leader Birtukan Midekssa, the first female political party leader in Ethiopian history, to prison on the bogus charge that she had “denied receiving a pardon”. After spending months in solitary confinement and suffering humiliation and degradation for nearly two years, Bitrukan “confessed” and “submitted a second application for pardon” stating: “I express my deep regret for deceiving the Ethiopian people and government by denying my release on pardon. Pledging not to ever resort to such fraudulent and deceptive acts I beg the Ethiopian people and government to grant me pardon.” She was “pardoned” in October 2010 and released!
In October 2011, Swedish journalists Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye were sentenced to eleven years as “terrorists”.  At the time, I predicted that soon enough the late leader  “will grandstand and declare the two journalists have been pardoned and released after they admitted guilt, expressed remorse and so on.” In September 2012, the two journalists were released after they submitted an “application for pardon”.  The regime put the two journalists on regime-owned television and forced them to confess that they “regretted entering the country with armed separatists of the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and without documentation.”
There is no question that Reeyot, Eskinder, Woubshet and the other political prisoners can walk out of prison at any time if they “confess” wrongdoing and “submit a pardon application.”  All Reeyot has to do to walk out of prison at any time is to get down on her knees, bow down her head, confess her political transgressions and beg to be “pardoned”. But Reeyot refuses to beg a “pardon” because she has done nothing wrong for which she needs to be pardoned. Following her sentence, Reeyot’s father, responding to a reporter’s question on whether he would advise his daughter to apologize and beg for a pardon, replied:
This is perhaps one of the most difficult questions a parent can face. As any one of us who are parents would readily admit,   there is an innate biological chord that attaches us to our kids. We wish nothing but the best for them. We try as much as humanly possible to keep them from harm…. Whether or not to beg for clemency is her right and her decision. I would honor and respect whatever decision she makes… To answer your specific question regarding my position on the issue by the fact of being her father, I would rather have her not plead for clemency, for she has not committed any crime.
The same goes for Eskinder Nega and Woubshet Taye. They have done nothing wrong so they shall ask for no pardon!
On another level, I also believe that the regime leaders deeply resent Reeyot, Eskinder, Woubshet and the other high profile political prisoners for the international attention and support they have been able to command. In many ways, these “bothersome” journalists have created a public relations nightmare for the regime. As I understand, many of the regime leaders believe these journalists have not only discredited them internationally but also taken the international recognition they feel they deserve.
In a comedic way, the regime leaders in Ethiopia remind me of the American comedian and actor, Rodney Dangerfield, known for the catchphrase “I don’t get no respect!” Regardless of what they do, they “don’t get no respect.” They sought world recognition for their single minded determination to build the “largest dam in Africa”, the so-called Renaissance Dam. That fantasy dam has become a potential casus belli (war justification) for Egypt. I called it dam of the damned. The regime trumpeted its 11 percent annual economic growth for the past decade, a canard mindlessly bandied about  by many of the world’s respected news organizations and even U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. I totally debunked that bold-faced lie in my commentary “Kerry-ing on With African Dictators”. For two decades, the regime proclaimed a warped doctrine of ethnic federalism as a political panacea for Ethiopia, but it was shown to be nothing more than a kinder and gentler form of Bantustans (kilils) under Apartheid South Africa. The regime and its late honcho sought domestic and international respectability for their “historic” and “monumental” achievements. Regardless of what they did or said, like Rodney Dangerfield, they just “don’t get no respect.”
A win-win proposal for the release of Reeyot, Eskinder, Woubshet and other political prisoners
I believe there is a legal way out of the “pardon” dilemma. Let’s be perfectly honest! We all know what the problem is:  The regime needs to save face for imprisoning Reeyot, Eskinder, Woubshet and the other political prisoners without just cause. Their signature way of saving face — namely having the victims confess their guilt in public and apply for a pardon — is not a workable political solution with these young journalists. But a legal solution is what is needed; and the dispositive question is whether the approval of Reeyot, Eskinder, Woubshet and the other political prisoners  is a necessary legal precondition for granting them pardon. It is not!
The regime can legally pardon the imprisoned journalists and others suo motu (a fancy legal word which means an act of authority taken without formal prompting from another party). Article 11 of Proclamation No. 395/2004 (“A Proclamation to Provide for the Procedure of Granting Pardon”) provides, “The main purpose of granting pardon is to ensure the welfare and interest of the public.” Article 12 provides that “…  the Ministry of Justice and the Federal prison commission may apply for pardon for persons entitled to it. Where the offices (sic) decides to apply for pardon, it shall deliver a copy of the application letter to the person in whose favour it is to be made.” The “person in whose favour a petition for pardon has been submitted pursuant to Sub-Article 2 of this Article declines it, he shall notify, the same to the Board in writing within fifteen consecutive working days.” Unless the prospective recipient of a pardon expressly refuses the pardon, “the acceptance of the pardon shall be presumed.”
Simply stated, the regime can declare that it has granted pardon and released Reeyot, Eskinder, Woubshet and the other political prisoners “to ensure the welfare and interest of the public” and in proper exercise of its prerogative under the Proclamation. I cannot imagine any reasonable person challenging or criticizing the regime for exercising its discretionary legal pardon authority on its own. The simple fact is that the regime does not need the request or approval of Reeyot, Eskinder, Woubshet and the other political prisoners to grant them pardon. The regim can simply issue the pardon and tell them they are free to go. No “muss, no fuss”!
My own studies of pardon powers in other societies have led me to the conclusion that pardon is a prerogative of mercy exercised by state authorities to mitigate the severity of the law. It is a discretionary power  that can be exercised at any time to temper retribution with mercy,  correct a miscarriage of justice or reconcile the ends of justice with compelling social and political needs. U.S. presidents have granted amnesties after the Civil War to the Southern rebels and to those who avoided the draft during the Vietnam War. President Bill Clinton granted pardon to Patricia Hearst who committed horrendous “terrorist acts” as a member of the Symbionese Liberation Army.
I harbor no illusions that the regime will pay any attention to my “win-win” proposal for the release of Reeyot, Eskinder, Woubshet and the other political prisoners. How could they possibly even consider a proposal from their severest and most relentless critic? They will no doubt dismiss anything I have to say because they probably believe I am proposing it to make them look bad or inflexible or show them to be obdurate. But this is not about my personal feelings or attitudes towards them or their governance style. It is all about their own pardon law and what they can do legally, immune from criticism or condemnation by anyone.  
All I am proposing is use of the regime’s own pardon law to face a critical human rights problem in such a way that they will not lose face or face criticism; and in fact by courageously facing the issue, they can gain universal approbation and admiration. The power of “pardon” is not in the hands of Reeyot, Eskinder, Woubshet and the other political prisoners. It is totally in the hands of the regime; and it can be exercised at will and at any time. Why not right a wrong when one has the unquestioned legal power to right a wrong and do the right thing?

የግንቦት 7 የፍትህ፤ የነጻነትና የዲሞክራሲ ንቅናቄ ዋና ጸሃፊ አቶ አንዳርጋቸው ፅጌ በቅርቡ ከኢሳት ቴሌቪዥን ጋር ባደረገው ቃለ ምልልስ ዋነኛው የኢትዮጵያ ብሔራዊና ዘላቂ ጥቅም ጠላት ወያኔ መሆኑን አስረግጦ ተናግሮ ነበር። ይህንን አባባል አንድ ተቃዋሚ ለተቃውሞ ያህል ወይም ስርዓቱን የሚጠላ አንድ ግለሰብ ስርአቱን ስለሚጠላዉ ብቻ እንደተናገረው አድርጎ አቃልሎ ማየት ትልቅ ስህተት ነው። ወያኔ ከፍጥረቱ ጀምሮ እስከአሁኑ ቅጽበት ድረስ በሀገራችን ላይ የፈጸመውን ደባ በቅጡ ያላዩ ሰዎች ይህ አባባል የተጋነነ ይመስላቸው ይሆናል። ኢትዮጵያ ዛሬም አንደ አገር የቆመችዉ በህዝቦቿ ታላቅነትና እንዲሁም ለታሪካቸው ባሳዩት ክብርና ብርታት ነዉ እንጂ እንደወያኔማ ቢሆን ኖሮ የኢትዮጵያ ህልውና አደጋ ላይ ከወደቀ ሰንብቷል።
ኢትዮጵያ የሚለውን ውብና ታሪካዊ የስም ለመጥራት እየተጸየፈ “የሀገራችን ህዝቦች” እያለ ሲጠራን የነበረው የወያኔዉ ሹም የንቀት አጣራር ወያኔዎች ከሀገሪቱ ስም ጋር ሳይቀር የገቡበትን ጠብ ያሳያል። ወያኔ አባቶቻችን ባቆዩልን ዳር ድንደር የሚደራር ብቻ ሳይሆን የአገራችንን መሬት ላብዕዳን እንካችሁ ያለ የኢትዮጵያ ታሪካዊ ጠላት ነዉ። በወያኔ እንደባሪያ ፈንግሎ የሚገዛት አገራችን ኢትዮጵያን የታሪክ አጋጣሚ እጁ ላይ ጥሎለት ነዉ እንጂ እሱ እንደሚነግረን ወያኔ ከራሱና ከጉጅሌዎቹ ጥቅም አስበልጦ ኢትዮጵያን አስቧት አያውቅም።
መገነጣጠል ግብ እንዲሆን በህገ መንግስት ደረጃ አንቀጽ ጽፎ ያስቀመጠው ወያኔ እሱ እንደሚለዉ ለብሔረሰቦች መብት አስቦ ሳይሆን ኢትዮጵያ አልዘረፍ ካለችን በትነናት ብንሄድስ ከሚል አላማ መሆኑን ሌናጤን ይገባል። ከምር ለብሄረሰቦች መብት በመቆርቆር ቢሆን ኖሮ ከጠመንጃና ከፍጅት በፊት የብሄረሰቦችን መብትና ነጻነት አክብሮ እራሳቸዉን በራሳቸዉ እንዲያስተዳድሩ ይተዋቸዉ ነበር።።
ወያኔ ኢትዮጵያን የሚፈልጋት ለርሱና ለጋሻ ጃግሬዎቹ የወርቅ እንቁላል የምትጥል ዶሮ ሆና ስላገኛት ብቻ ነው። ሀገሪቱን እያለማሁ፣ እያሳደግኩ ነው የሚለው ዲስኩር ለተራ መደለያ እንኳን የማይሆን ውሸት ለተራበው ህዝብ ምኑም እንዳልሆነ ያውቀዋል።
የሀገሪቱን ለም መሬት በሄክታር ባንድ ፓኮ ሲጋራ ዋጋ የሚቸረችረው ወያኔ እነዚህ ባእዳን በጎን የሚሰጡትን የሀገራችንን መሬት ዋጋ ኪሱ መክተቱን አረጋግጦ ነው። ዛሬ በመላ ሀገሪቱ የሚነዛው የኬሚካል ማዳበሪያ በጥቂት አመታት ውስጥ የሀገሪቱን አፈር ድራሽ እንደሚያጠፋ ወያኔ የአዋቂዎች ምክር ሳይሰማ ስለቀረ አይደለም። በአጥፊ ስራው የቀጠለው መዝረፍ የሚችለዉን ንብረት ካጋበሰና ከዘረፈ በኋላ ነገ ኢትዮጵያ እንደአለ ባድማ ብትሆን ቅንጣት ስለማይሰማዉ ነዉ። ለሀገር የሚያስብ መንግስት ቢሆን ኖሮ የአገሪቱ ወጣትና የተማረ የሰዉ ኃይል እንደ ጎርፍ ከአገሪቱ እየጎረፈ ሲወጣ ይቆረቆር ነበር። ወያኔ የተማረ ሰው ቢሰደድ፣ ዜጎች ቢራቡና በገዛ አገራቸዉ ቢዋረዱ ጉዳዩ አይደለም። በሰላማዊና ህገመንግስታዊ መንገድ ጥያቄ ያነሳን ዜጋ ሁሉ እንደአውሬ የሚቀጠቅጠውና ወህኒ ቤት የሚያጉረው ይህ በደል ነገ በሀገሪቱ ዘላቂ ህልውና ላይ የሚያመጣውን መዘዝ አጥቶት አይደለም። የአገራችን የኢትዮጵያ ብሄራዊ ጥቅም ጉዳዩ ስላልሆነ እንጂ።
የኢትዮጵያን ብሄር ቤሄረሰቦች የሚያይዟቸውን በሚሊዮን የሚቆጠሩ የአንድነት ክሮች እያንቋሸሸና እንደሌሉ እየሰበከ በሚለያዩንን ጥቃቅን ውጭያዊ የቋንቋና የዘር ግንዶች አጉልቶ የሚያሳየን አገራችንንና ህዝቧን እንደ አንድ ሀገር ሳይሆን እንደጊዚያዊ የዝርፊያ ቀጠና ስለሚመለከት ብቻ ነው።
ወያኔና ሎሌዎቹ የኢትዮጵያ ብሄራዊ ጥቅም ጠላቶቹ ናቸው እያሉ አንዴ የፈረሰችዉ ሶማሊያን፤ ሌላ ጊዜ ወደ ኤርትራና ግብጽ ጣቱን የሚጠነቁሉት አይናችንን ከወያኔ ላይ እንድናነሳ ነዉ እንጂ ከወያኔ በላይ የኢትዮጵያ ብሄራዊ ጥቅም ጠላት የለም። ወያኔ በአካል እኛን ከሚመስሉ ኢትዮጵያውያን መሃል ይውጣ እንጂ፣ በተግባር ከቀን ጅብ ያልተናነሰ የዘረኞችና የዘራፊዎች ቡድን ነው። ብዙ ጊዜ ወያኔ ራሱ የጻፈውን ህግ ሲጥስ ለምን ብለን የምንገረም አለን። ወያኔ ሕግና ሕገ-መንግስት፣ ለአገራቸዉ የሚቆረቆሩ ምሁራንን የሚያፈሩ የትምህርት ተቋማት፣ በህዝብ የሚታመን ሰራዊት፣ ለህግ ብቻ የሚሰራ ፍርድቤትና የመሳሰሉት ዘላቂ ተቋማት እንዳይኖሩን የሚያደርገውና ያሉትንም የሚያፈርሰው ለኢትዮጵያ ብሄራዊና ዘላቂ ጥቅም ምንም ደንታ ስለሌለዉ ነዉመሆኑን የሚዘነጋ ኢትዮጵያዊ በእጅጉ የዋህ ነው። ወያኔ የኢትዮጵያ ጠላት ነው።
ስለዚህም እንላለን እኛ የግንቦት 7 ልጆችህ ሀገርህ ትውልድ ተሻግራ እንድትቀጥል አንተም የምትኮራባት ዜጋ እንድትሆናት የምትሻ የኢትዮጵያ ልጅ ሁሉ ሀገርህን ከወያኔ የቀን ጅቦችና ወራሪዎች አድን። አጎንብሰህ ሳይሆን ቀና ብለህ የምትሄድባት ሀገር እንድትኖርህ የምትሻ ሁሉ ለማይቀረው የጀመርነውን የአርበኝነትና የነጻነት ትግል ጉዞ ተቀላቀለን። እኛ የተባበርን እለት አብረን የተነሳንና በቃ ያልን እለት ታሪካዊቷ ሀገራችንና ታላቁ ሕዝባችን ዘላቂ ብሄራዊ ጥቅማቸው ይከበራል።
አዎ የኢትዮጵያ ብሔራዊ ጥቅም ዋነኛ ጠላት ወያኔ ብቻ ነው!!

የሀገሪቱን ለም መሬት በሄክታር ባንድ ፓኮ ሲጋራ ዋጋ የሚቸረችረው ወያኔ እነዚህ ባእዳን በጎን የሚሰጡትን የሀገራችንን መሬት ዋጋ ኪሱ መክተቱን አረጋግጦ ነው። ዛሬ በመላ ሀገሪቱ የሚነዛው የኬሚካል ማዳበሪያ በጥቂት አመታት ውስጥ የሀገሪቱን አፈር ድራሽ እንደሚያጠፋ ወያኔ የአዋቂዎች ምክር ሳይሰማ ስለቀረ አይደለም። በአጥፊ ስራው የቀጠለው መዝረፍ የሚችለዉን ንብረት ካጋበሰና ከዘረፈ በኋላ ነገ ኢትዮጵያ እንደአለ ባድማ ብትሆን ቅንጣት ስለማይሰማዉ ነዉ። ለሀገር የሚያስብ መንግስት ቢሆን ኖሮ የአገሪቱ ወጣትና የተማረ የሰዉ ኃይል እንደ ጎርፍ ከአገሪቱ እየጎረፈ ሲወጣ ይቆረቆር ነበር። ወያኔ የተማረ ሰው ቢሰደድ፣ ዜጎች ቢራቡና በገዛ አገራቸዉ ቢዋረዱ ጉዳዩ አይደለም። በሰላማዊና ህገመንግስታዊ መንገድ ጥያቄ ያነሳን ዜጋ ሁሉ እንደአውሬ የሚቀጠቅጠውና ወህኒ ቤት የሚያጉረው ይህ በደል ነገ በሀገሪቱ ዘላቂ ህልውና ላይ የሚያመጣውን መዘዝ አጥቶት አይደለም። የአገራችን የኢትዮጵያ ብሄራዊ ጥቅም ጉዳዩ ስላልሆነ እንጂ።
የኢትዮጵያን ብሄር ቤሄረሰቦች የሚያይዟቸውን በሚሊዮን የሚቆጠሩ የአንድነት ክሮች እያንቋሸሸና እንደሌሉ እየሰበከ በሚለያዩንን ጥቃቅን ውጭያዊ የቋንቋና የዘር ግንዶች አጉልቶ የሚያሳየን አገራችንንና ህዝቧን እንደ አንድ ሀገር ሳይሆን እንደጊዚያዊ የዝርፊያ ቀጠና ስለሚመለከት ብቻ ነው።
ወያኔና ሎሌዎቹ የኢትዮጵያ ብሄራዊ ጥቅም ጠላቶቹ ናቸው እያሉ አንዴ የፈረሰችዉ ሶማሊያን፤ ሌላ ጊዜ ወደ ኤርትራና ግብጽ ጣቱን የሚጠነቁሉት አይናችንን ከወያኔ ላይ እንድናነሳ ነዉ እንጂ ከወያኔ በላይ የኢትዮጵያ ብሄራዊ ጥቅም ጠላት የለም። ወያኔ በአካል እኛን ከሚመስሉ ኢትዮጵያውያን መሃል ይውጣ እንጂ፣ በተግባር ከቀን ጅብ ያልተናነሰ የዘረኞችና የዘራፊዎች ቡድን ነው። ብዙ ጊዜ ወያኔ ራሱ የጻፈውን ህግ ሲጥስ ለምን ብለን የምንገረም አለን። ወያኔ ሕግና ሕገ-መንግስት፣ ለአገራቸዉ የሚቆረቆሩ ምሁራንን የሚያፈሩ የትምህርት ተቋማት፣ በህዝብ የሚታመን ሰራዊት፣ ለህግ ብቻ የሚሰራ ፍርድቤትና የመሳሰሉት ዘላቂ ተቋማት እንዳይኖሩን የሚያደርገውና ያሉትንም የሚያፈርሰው ለኢትዮጵያ ብሄራዊና ዘላቂ ጥቅም ምንም ደንታ ስለሌለዉ ነዉመሆኑን የሚዘነጋ ኢትዮጵያዊ በእጅጉ የዋህ ነው። ወያኔ የኢትዮጵያ ጠላት ነው።
ስለዚህም እንላለን እኛ የግንቦት 7 ልጆችህ ሀገርህ ትውልድ ተሻግራ እንድትቀጥል አንተም የምትኮራባት ዜጋ እንድትሆናት የምትሻ የኢትዮጵያ ልጅ ሁሉ ሀገርህን ከወያኔ የቀን ጅቦችና ወራሪዎች አድን። አጎንብሰህ ሳይሆን ቀና ብለህ የምትሄድባት ሀገር እንድትኖርህ የምትሻ ሁሉ ለማይቀረው የጀመርነውን የአርበኝነትና የነጻነት ትግል ጉዞ ተቀላቀለን። እኛ የተባበርን እለት አብረን የተነሳንና በቃ ያልን እለት ታሪካዊቷ ሀገራችንና ታላቁ ሕዝባችን ዘላቂ ብሄራዊ ጥቅማቸው ይከበራል።

In the last month, the military intelligence wing of Ginbot 7 has uncovered vital information that substantiates its past claims that all high level military positions in the Ethiopian army are asymmetrically dominated by a minority ethnic group lead by the TPLF elite.)

First of all, may my respectful and brotherly greetings reach you all wherever you may be!

I wish to express my gratitude to you all for not succumbing to the ruling regime's propaganda avalanche that describes me as being "a terrorist who rides the horse of death, is accompanied by angels of destruction and is bent on making Ethiopia a land of blood." Instead, you have realized that my imprisonment and that of my friends here is a symbol of the larger imprisonment of the Ethiopian people and you have become a clear and powerful expression of my stifled voice. I am grateful to you for keeping me in your thoughts and for giving such a precious value to the small sacrifice that I am making. 

To begin with, it was not without good reason that I did not shy away from the struggle, knowing full well that I would go to prison, leaving behind my young children and my fresh marital life. I ardently believe that there is nothing more precious in this world than freedom for which man could live and die. I believe wholeheartedly that, as long as I have a clear conscience and clarity of purpose, God, who is the Father of knowledge and freedom, and you my fellow men and women would always be on my side as I come and go through the winding paths of suffering. I am also fully confident that the Ethiopian people, particularly the youth, will bear the torch of struggle aloft and continue to march forward until freedom dawns is won and shines brightly on our land. 

In the 20th century, people in many countries have seen and basked in the rays of freedom. I believe that the 21st century will be a time when these rays of freedom will also shine brightly on countries like Ethiopia. The century is one of freedom. I believe God has willed that we live in this particular century so that we can struggle to fulfill the primary purpose of our creation, namely: the realization of freedom, brotherhood, love and peace. Where there is no freedom, there is no lasting peace. Where there is no freedom, there is no love. Where there is no freedom, there is no sustainable development. Where there is no freedom, human interaction becomes embroiled in a quagmire of problems. Therefore, the struggle waged for freedom is the mother of all struggles. We Ethiopians know full well that regaining our freedom from the grips of dictators who considered ruling over people oppressively as their natural right is not easy. The magnitude of the price paid in such a struggle is measured in terms of the severity of the imprisonment, bodily harm and the lives sacrificed. 

If you were not a terrorist, why are you imprisoned? How can an entity that considers itself a government lie? Even if the government imprisons you under false charges, why didn't the court set your free? Why did it sentence you to life imprisonment? In a country where any politician can criticize the government and go home in peace, what is special about you? These are questions I believe are raised repeatedly particularly by the supporters of the regime. I do not blame them for asking such questions. Really though, why am I imprisoned? Why are my friends imprisoned?

As in the past centuries, the Ethiopian people of the 21st century are still suffering under the yoke of oppression. Though this is the prevailing case, EPRDF, just like the Derg, claims that it is "a democratic government". What is more, it is telling us that its democracy can serve as a model for other countries. However, its all-out campaign to convert lies into truths is not succeeding. If its propaganda campaign does not succeed, the other alternative the regime has is to "cut the feet of opposition parties" and stifle the struggle for freedom in the bud. Imprisoning individuals and groups is still another means of smothering dissent. 

It is not the barrel of the gun alone that the ruling regime uses to debilitate the struggle for freedom. It also makes public institutions fabricate endless lies. Courts that should have been temples of justice have become public squares where lies are manufactured and truth is sacrificed. If we take me as an example, earlier, I was accused as one of the CUD leaders, of "trying to change the constitutional system through violence". This time, I am accused along with others, of "terrorism and treason." In both cases I have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Injustice that was committed yesterday is also being committed today. What is being perpetrated against me is being perpetrated against many other Ethiopians. Many innocent Ethiopians have paid untold sacrifices of limb and life. 

The answer to the questions raised above can be summarized in one statement. Re'yot Alemu, Eskendir Negga, Beqele Ge rba, Olbaba Lelisa, Natnael Mekonnen, I and numerous other Ethiopians are languishing in prison at present because, in this twenty-first century, Ethiopia has become a land of torturous oppression. It is the ruling regime that decides who should be targeted for labeling and who the next prisoners would be. 

In the past, our forefathers had left their sweet homes and tender children behind in response to calls to defend their homeland against foreign aggressors. They took it as an honour to stand in defense of their homeland and to pay the sacrifices that the occasions required. In the same way, my being thrown into prison for the small effort that I have made to struggle through peaceful means against the ruling regime's yoke of oppression that has been bearing down on the Ethiopian people for ages, gives me a sense of pride. There is not a single crime that I have committed, that would nag my conscience and deprive me of sleep. As a result, even the concrete floor on which I sleep gives me warmth.

In the past centuries as well as in the present 21st century of Ethiopia's existence, the most powerful issue in the national agenda has been the question of the sovereignty of the Ethiopian people. There has not been any other issue that united the people more than the question of sovereignty. The struggle for freedom waged by political parties is not a struggle to seize power. The struggle for the sovereignty of the Ethiopian people must be a common cause that should unite the various political parties, including the ruling party. Perhaps it may be naive to wish that the key persons of the ruling regime would be involved in this struggle of ensuring the sovereignty of the people. After all, against whom are we waging the struggle?

Instead of resolving conflicts through dialogue, the ruling regime has chosen to solve problems through the bullets of sharpshooters. This attitude clearly shows its backward and intransigent nature. However, this nature of the ruling regime does not discourage us and make us retreat from the struggle. Rather, it gives us an added cause to confront and challenge it with greater determination. Retreating from the struggle would not bring light. It would rather make the darkness even darker. 

The day we are able to carry out a well organized, disciplined and peaceful struggle, not only would we be able to bring down brutal dictatorship from the shoulder of the Ethiopian people but we would also be able to abolish dictatorship from appearing ever again in the political arena of our country. But given the path that we have come through, given the speed with which we have moved and given the efforts we have made, centered around private interests, we would not be able to achieve much.

Thinking about the efforts made in our country in the name of peaceful struggle and about the mistakes made alone would make one go sick and disconcerted. The worst mistake would be, however, if we do not learn from those past mistakes and are still unable to conduct a well planned and well executed struggle that achieves its goal with certainty. The worst of all mistakes would be if, as a result of our past mistakes, we move far apart instead of coming closer to each other; if we fear each other instead of trusting each other; if we disparage each other instead of respecting and encouraging each other; if we hate each other instead of loving each other. And being separated from each other in this manner, we render ourselves unable to raise our united hands against the ruling regime and thus allowing the period of oppressive rule to be prolonged. It is inhuman to rule over people through oppression. It is equally inhuman to succumb to oppression. As those who rule oppression would be criminals, so would those who timidly offer their backs conveniently and ready for dictatorial rule, particularly during this time when the struggle for liberation is being waged in all directions. There will come the time when all these persons would be accountable for their actions or inactions.

There could be some ones who would ask: "What oppression are you talking about? It has been some 22 years since we have gained our freedom from oppression." There may be others who would say: "We are working and we carry bread in our hands for our children when we go home. What is more freedom than this?" There may be some in the Diaspora who would say: "The freedom that we were denied in our own country, we have regained it in a foreign country. What special reason would we have that would compel us to struggle so that freedom would prevail in Ethiopia?" 

When the majority of Ethiopians are suffering under brutal oppression, what kind of freedom is it that the few say they have regained? In a system that oppresses the majority, how long can anyone continue to be free? In a situation where the ruling regime oppresses those who hold differing views, how long can we continue to exist with our voice stifled and our conscience obscured so that we could not speak the truth? In a country where the majority are hungry, how long can the few that have plenty continue to be well fed? In a country where there is no real freedom but a semblance of it, those of us who believe that we are free can only have a distorted view of freedom. In a country where a dictatorial regime twists the arm of the people and claims to have won 99.6% of their voice, it becomes senseless to argue whether or not there is freedom in that country. How meaningful and satisfying is it for us who have fled from a country where there is no freedom to be enjoying the freedom that other fathers have brought? And what credible explanation can we give on this matter to the children that we have engendered? Even those who believe that they can live freely in a foreign country have the responsibility of supporting in all the ways they can the struggle that their brothers and sisters at home are waging for freedom. There is no justification by any measure to say: "It is no concern of ours if others are downtrodden, as long as we live in freedom; or if others are starving as long as we are able to get our daily bread." Although we have our individual lives, we should not forget even for a moment that our destinies as well as those of our children are intertwined. 

To speak the truth, the majority of those fellow country men and women who are, in many ways, in a position to contribute much to supporting and leading the struggle for freedom that is being waged by the people of this country are not playing their proper role and carrying out their responsibility. In fact, they seem to countenance the regime that they do not support and thereby showing a tendency of encouraging it to continue with its dictatorial rule. On the other hand, it has become a common matter to hear others who, over "machiato" and in their private rooms, calling for "their horses to be readied" for they are about to declare war against the regime. Our struggle for freedom has to come out of the "machiato" shops and private rooms without delay. 

Bequeathing to our present children and to those who are yet unborn an Ethiopia that is a land of freedom and whose paths are free from thorns and other obstacles is a primary responsibility entrusted upon us all. A responsibility as major as this cannot be realized by a few. It requires an unreserved and all-encompassing effort from all of us. 

Although freeing the Ethiopian people from dictatorial rule is primarily the responsibility of us 
Ethiopians, it is an internationally recognized truth that nations could have positive or negative influence on other nations. This truth has become more obvious during this century. 

In the past, Ethiopians have given their support to enable other Africans to bring down Apartheid and colonial rule. A considerable number of African countries are now marching along the road of democracy. Ethiopia, however, is still suffering under a dictatorial rule. What is distressing is seeing South Africans, who know the suffering under an unjust rule of Apartheid and should have stood on the side of the Ethiopian people's struggle for freedom, have chosen to be on the side the ruling regime. 

Whenever famine struck in our country and people were struggling with death, the International Community has responded rapidly with food and other life saving supplies. Their generous responses have saved the precious lives of millions of our people and we are indeed grateful for that. On the other hand, when our people wage a struggle to extricate their freedom from the tight grip of dictators, the International Community has turned its eyes away and given their backs to the people. Our humanitarianism should be aroused not only when people are hungry for bread but also when they are hungry for freedom. 

We should not forget for a moment that injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. Supporting a regime that is the cause of poverty and hunger, sending wheat when famine strikes does not show being on the side of the people. Providing food for the physical nature of man but showing no concern and turning a blind eye when people are deprived of their freedom that is the basis of their sacred being is like viewing the physical and the spiritual aspect of the individual in isolation of each other. 

That the Ethiopian people are unable to be masters of their freedom is primarily the failure of the Ethiopian people themselves. However, it must be said that those who declare that democracy is also a concern of theirs share the failure. If there are those who say that human rights and democratic values are matters of concern to them but then they turn their blind eyes when it comes to economic and political interests, they should realize that they are following the wrong path of history.

No matter where or when it may be, leaders that oppress their people can never be reliable partners in the pursuit of peace or in the sustainable maintenance of political or economic interests. Sustainable world peace can be ensured, development can be accelerated and interests of countries can be reliably promoted only in an environment of truth and freedom and by standing on the side of democratic forces. Ethiopia and the world in general would be indebted to the International Community if it worked not only for world peace and prosperity but also if it helped the Ethiopian people in their struggle for freedom and democracy. The world has witnessed the devastating effects of the mistakes the International Community has repeatedly made by allying itself with brutal dictators in order to gain temporary political and economic benefits. As a result of these mistakes, we have seen and are still seeing with great sadness world peace being disrupted, economies being ruined and innocent lives being lost. The International Community should learn from its past mistakes so as not to repeat them. 

When I say what I have said above, I wish to underscore that I am not in any way suggesting that the International Community has not contributed anything to the struggle of the Ethiopian people for freedom. The message that I wish to convey clearly is that the support did not take the Ethiopian people seriously and that the magnitude of the support, compared with the degree of the cruelty of the oppression, is small.

The struggle that we Ethiopians have waged so that the sun of freedom would shine in the country is not something that one could boast about. The outcome of that struggle is a good witness and we cannot blame anyone else, including the ruling regime, for this. The ruling regime, as seen from its actions, is determined to continue to rule, not with the will of the people but with power obtained through suppression. 

We Ethiopians should wage a well planned and strengthened struggle for our freedom in unison, undivided by politics, religion, age or economic class. The secret of our failure to be free lies in the fact that we individually or in unison have been unable to wage a struggle that gave priority to the wellbeing of the people and of the coming generations and to the future of the country as a whole. There is no concern for each of us and each of us has no concern for all.

Finally, even though the ruling regime has thrown me in prison on false charges so that my life would be wasted in incarceration, I feel happy and honoured to know that there are people who think of me and are on my side. May God honour you as you have honoured me by keeping me in your thoughts! Even though, as a person who is sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison, I cannot say much about what could happen in the outside world, somehow my heart is filled with hope. I strongly believe that a time is coming rapidly when a bright light of freedom will rise high above the lofty mountains of Ethiopia--a light that will shine upon every hill, valley and plain, upon every Ethiopian hut, upon every Ethiopian woman and man to and make us forget the dark days of the past. 

It is my ardent hope that the time will not be far when I and the others prisoners like me here will be out of this life of repression and meet with you all outside of the confines of prison to deliberate on the general condition of our country and to commune with each other, full of hope and with a spirit of brotherhood.
